Halloween Dos and Don'ts

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year, for children and adults alike. Derived from Pagan rituals, Halloween has evolved into something commercialized, sanitized, and secularized. That doesn't bother me, though, nor should it bother you. We can all use it as an excuse to have a good time.

For at least a few decades now, many adults have made it known that they don't want to be mere candy door greeters. So there's a possibly over one billion dollar industry for adult Halloween costumes. Many workplaces have Halloween parties, and there are many adult Halloween parties at bars, clubs, and friends' houses, too.

I've seen a lot in the 25 Halloweens I've seen so far, so I have some 'dos & don'ts' for readers. I'm trying to cover all the bases here. Enjoy!

Make sure your kids are wearing safe costumes.

As much fun as masks are, I've been taught time and time again that most masks don't offer kids enough vision for them to behave safely. Either have your kids wear masks with large eye holes, or paint their faces instead.

Have your kids wear costumes that aren't too long to trip over. Young children can get really excited on Halloween night, and that makes tripping over their costumes more probable.

If at all possible, make sure your child's costume is visible to others, motorists in particular. If your kid is going to wear a black witch costume like I did for a few years, talk your kid into letting you put orange reflective strips on it. Those can be purchased at most Halloween shops and department stores. Lighter-colored costumes are also good for visibility.

Keep a close eye on your children.
As I mentioned before, little kids can get really excited on Halloween night, and they'll likely want to run around. Make it clear to your children that they are to stay near you at all times. If you are an adult supervising children for Halloween, don't have more than three kids per adult. So, if you're taking a lot of kids, have extra adults with you.

This might sound obvious to you, but if you're supervising children for Halloween, don't be drunk, stoned, or otherwise high while you're out with them. To ensure your kids' safety, and your own as well, make sure you 'trick or treat' sober. If you're going to drink on Halloween night, do so after the kids are in bed.

When your kids are at a door, make sure you aren't more than ten feet away. And, never let your kids enter a stranger's house.

Inspect your kids' candy before you let them eat it.
Throw out anything that isn't in factory-sealed packaging. Little wrapped candies are okay. Also make sure you throw out anything that looks tampered with. For several early Novembers in a row, I've read media stories about people putting razor blades or poisons in candy. Chances are, all the houses your kids will visit will be full of nice people. But, make sure you don't become a statistic.

If you are greeting 'trick or treaters' this year, make sure the kids visiting you have fun.

Only give out candy and snacks you know kids will love. Chocolate bars, bubble gum, Twizzlers, gummy candy, and potato chips are all great. Raisins, peanuts, and those gross brown toffees in orange and black wrappers I remember receiving as a kid were all disappointments.

Keep in mind that other parents will be inspecting THEIR kids' candy, and make sure the stuff you give out is all in factory-sealed packaging, too.

Put at least a little bit of effort into decorating your house. This year, I will put up some cardboard gravestones. Yes, it's cliched, but at least it'll show I'm trying. Jack o' lanterns are great, make sure they're lit. Other Halloween decorations are good as well, and you don't necessarily have to spend a lot of money, especially if you are creative, yourself. My fiancé and I don't have kids, but if we did, we would involve them in the Halloween house decorating process. Related to that point: being childless is no excuse to not make sure you're ready for 'trick or treaters'.

Be ready for UNICEF.
When I was a grade school kid, we were all handed orange and black UNICEF collection boxes for 'trick or treating'. I've seen in recent years that children all over Canada and the United States are still given those boxes. UNICEF is a great cause. It's better to be safe than sorry, so be sure to have $20 worth of change at hand, just in case.

Behave yourself at adult Halloween parties!
Some of us will be attending Halloween parties related to work. You don't want to put your job at risk because you got wasted and did something stupid. If you are going to a party hosted by a friend, you don't want to embarrass yourself in front of your friends, or your friends' friends. If you are going to a party at a bar or club, you don't want to be a victim of a spiked drink, a pickpocket, or a sleazy guy. If you are going to drink at any of these settings, don't drink more than you can handle. Be aware of what you say and do. And, certainly, don't drink and drive. Have a designated driver or taxi money ready. Make sure your friends do the same. Finally, don't let your friends or co-workers share photos of you, on Facebook or elsewhere, in a compromising position.

Be clever about YOUR costume.
I'm a 26-year-old woman, and females my age, as well as those who are a bit younger and a bit older, tend to love to use Halloween as an opportunity to dress as a 'slutty nurse' or a 'sexy Big Bird'. I'm not joking about the latter. I've seen pictures of all kinds of 'sexy' Halloween costumes being sold that are turning children's icons into stripper costumes. Frankly, dressing in a 'sexy' way for Halloween has been done to death. And, you certainly don't want to be greeting children dressed like that, or dressing that way to a work-related Halloween party.

Try to be original, instead. For the past few years, I've always dressed as a 'Creepy Crawley' to greet 'trick or treaters'. Get it? My surname (It's my maiden name, and I'm never changing it!) is Crawley, and I'm creepy. I was born on Friday the 13th. I'm lefthanded. What do you expect?

Set age limits on 'trick or treating'.

If you take your kids out before they are four or five years old, they're unlikely to remember it. Plus, they won't be able to easily follow your safety instructions. And spending an hour or so 'trick or treating' will tire them out!

If you or your child is over twelve, people at the door may be a good sport and hand out candy anyway, but they may resent having teenage or even adult 'trick or treaters'. Encourage teens to attend Halloween parties with their friends, instead. And, make sure they have adult supervision! The only exception made for teenage 'trick or treaters' is if they are supervising younger siblings.

And last, but not least...

Take advantage of all the Halloween sales that start on November 1st!

Do you love candy? Buy lots of it, cheap! Some types of candy, such as lollipops, will be good for you to keep in your basement and hand out next year. That obviously doesn't apply to potato chips and the like. If you buy any candy that is post-Halloween discounted that will perish in a few months, make sure that's the stuff you'll eat until New Year's Eve.

After Halloween is also a good time to buy house decorations, and costumes for next year - for adults, though, not kids. Kids will often be disappointed to wear a costume that was purchased the previous year. They are also more likely to change their minds about what 'they want to be' than adults are.

So, there you are! I hope everyone reading this has a Happy Halloween this year. Be safe, maintain your dignity, and have fun.

Gypsy Fortune Teller Halloween Costumes - Easy to Make

Image : http://www.flickr.com

As a little girl I often loved to dress up as a gypsy, whether it was for Halloween or just for play. Maybe it's because I long to be free to do as I want and go where I wish, without the societal constraints we have to live by (that's why pirates are so fascinating to people too). Whatever it is, creating a fortune teller costume was the highlight of Halloween.

Back then there weren't many places to buy fancy costumes (nor did we have the money), so putting my own costume together was a bit of a challenge. Today we can purchase practically any costume we can think of and there are some pretty nice fortune teller Halloween costumes to choose from.

** A Brief History of Gypsy Costumes **

The gypsy people were called Roma or Romani. They are made up of loose nomadic tribes that wandered much of the European countries during the Middle Ages and often lived in caravans. There are still nomadic gypsies in the world today.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the basic dress of the woman was a simple robe gathered at the neck worn over an under gown made of chemise. They also wore a length of cloth which was draped down the back, around the opposite waist, up the front and tied at the shoulder (think Roman toga). A turban was worn on the head.

As time went on, fashions changed. For the most part, gypsies actually dressed very similar to the peasants of the area in which they traveled and cultural dress of the time. Most of the style of gypsy clothing that we picture today probably came from the Renaissance period when laced vests, flounced skirts, men's breeches and pirate shirts were more popular.

** Making a Gypsy Halloween Costume **

For those that want to put together their own gypsy costume or are planning on being a "fortune teller" for Halloween this year, you may have to do a bit of shopping around at used clothing stores for some items. If you are handy with a sewing machine, there are many fortune teller costume patterns available as well. Here are some suggestions for both men and women (and boys/girls) that can easily be created once you get all the items:

Women/Girl's Fortune Teller/Gypsy Outfit 1

* Long tired skirt in a bright color.

* Gypsy style shirt - gathered scooped neck, puffy sleeves gathered at the wrist or long wide flowing sleeves

* Brightly colored front-laced vest

* Black leotard stockings

* Black shoes

* Brightly colored sash for the waist

* Matching bandana for hair

* Gold hoop earrings and some long, colorful beaded necklaces, bangles for arms

Women/Girl's Fortune Teller/Gypsy Outfit

* Long wide-flowing black skirt

* White peasant's shirt

* Black front-laced vest

* Black stockings

* Black shoes

* Brightly colored apron or a shorter overskirt

* Long black wig with tight ringlets or curls

* Colored 2" to 3" wide headband

* Gold hoop earrings and some long, colorful beaded necklaces, bangles for arms

Men/Boys Gypsy/Pirate Costume

* Black or brown breeches

* Black boots

* White pirate shirt

* Long-length black or brown vest preferably trimmed with a gold-colored braiding

* Red or another colorful long scarf for the sash at the waist

* Colorful bandana

* One gold hoop earring

Let your imagination run wild with the colors and styles you could mix and match. The trick is to dress in layers and use clothing that is loose and flowing. Add jewelry like bangles, long flowing necklaces, large earrings and ankle bracelets to enhance your outfit. Use colorful sashes accent the waist (and also to hold daggers). Women could drape several sheer scarves from their waist to hang down in points around a solid colored skirt. Include headbands, bandanas and even eye patches for that gypsy pirate look. Purples, blues, greens, bright yellows, reds and blacks are the most popular colors and will make your outfit stand out.

The Superiority of Homemade Halloween Costumes

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Halloween costume contests are never won by store-bought costumes, no matter how well made or unique. Homemade Halloween costumes are simply more impressive. Those triumphant homemade costumes show far better creativity, crafting skill and most of all, effort. The costume can really be quite simple, as long as the idea behind the costume is clever. Homemade Halloween costumes based on puns score extra points.

I entered into my first Halloween costume contest at the age of five, alongside my two sisters. We were dressed as crayons thanks to a touch of craftiness from our mother. To make the crayon costumes, she measured around our bodies, cut out tubes of felt and affixed Velcro at the back. The tubes covered from chest to feet with short and simple suspenders sewn onto the felt. Crayon point hats were created with the help of a cardboard triangle glued into a funnel shape and covered with felt. Black felt supplied the "Crayola" and squiggles at each end.

The brilliant thing about our homemade Halloween costumes is that they were so easy to make but looked quite adorable (if I do say so myself). The felt tubes were quick to toss on over coordinating clothes and were quite comfortable, important requirements for impatient trick-or-treaters. Requiring only felt, Velcro, scissors and glue, they were also cheap for Mom. Any kid or adult could immediately identify our costume, which indulged such a pinnacle kid favorite. While we did not win the costume contest that year, we still have these homemade Halloween costumes made so many years ago.

Those crayons will always be first in my heart, but I have seen many great homemade Halloween costumes over the years. Groups of people seem to be a contributing factor in great homemade Halloween costumes. A group of costumed people creating a Halloween theme together just compounds the cute, just like with puppies. One year, a group of my friends went as Tetris pieces that actually fit together. A series of cardboard boxes and paint provided all the materials. Painting and assembling those boxes might have been more fun than the Halloween party we wore them.

Another year, we decided on a rather dark yet nerdy Halloween party theme, Dead Authors. With such a specific topic, homemade Halloween costumes were absolutely essential. We had a prize for the best costume, a collapsible ping-pong table made out of scrap wood salvaged by my engineer roommate. Extra points were given to dead author costumes incorporating how the authors died. The best and winning costume was Sylvia Plath who constructed an oven around her head with a clear, swinging door and knobs. I dressed as Virginia Woolf, filling my cardigan pockets with rocks.

Sure, our dead author costumes were dark, perhaps even a touch disrespectful, but they were also funny. They commemorated the darker side of these authorial geniuses. More importantly, they were creative and encouraged everyone to make something with their hands. For students accustomed to reading and writing all day long, the homemade Halloween costumes were strangely therapeutic.

Make your own homemade Halloween costumes this year.

Best Halloween Costumes

Every year at the end of October kids and adults alike get dressed up in costumes and try to scare neighbors, friends and relatives. It's called Halloween and when you combine candy, spooky costumes and fun you've got a holiday worth celebrating. Here are some of my favourite costume ideas from years past.

The cowboy and particularly the sheriff has always been a favourite among younger boys. It was popular when I was a kid and every year I still see my fair share of young cowboys, pretending that they are the good guys.

What the cowboy costume is to little boys, the princess costume is to little girls. Little girls love to get dressed up, the more sparkles the better. Don't forget the tiara. Some little girls also like to have a sceptre or wand to complete the costume.

Pirates have been popular forever and with the Pirates of the Caribbean series of movies having had such success, every little boy, and my little girl, wants to be captain Jack Sparrow. Don't forget the other popular pirate related characters like Captain Hook and Peter Pan.

The witch and princess witch are two costumes that work very well. This all depends on your little girl, some want to be scary, others want to be a friendly witch. The pretty witch has the hat, but not the nose and the clothes have some lighter colours in them.

The devil is a controversial Halloween costume. I know some parents who are so against this costume that it causes them to ignore Halloween all together. To these people I say "get a grip". It's just pretend. Anyway, the devil, all in red with a tail and horns is one of the coolest kid costumes around.

The mummy costume, like pirates has seen a revival lately. This is mostly because of the success of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns movies. It's an easy costume to do and can be pretty creepy in the dark.

I'm going to group all of the super hero's together. Spider-Man should be big this year, as should Superman. Just don't forget the Hulk, Wonder-Woman and Batman. All are favourites almost every year.

Star Wars seems to be it's own genre of Halloween costume. So many characters in the movies translate well into costumes. Chewy is always fun. When I was a kid it was Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia and of course Darth Vader and storm troopers. Nowadays it's Anakin and anyone else in the Jedi order and the Sith or of course Padme for the girls.

For scary costumes, look to the movies. Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nighmare of Elm Street and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. If there aren't enough scary examples in those, then you're not looking hard enough.

When I was in university I needed a costume for a Halloween party. After much searching, my sister said that she would make me one and we started looking through patterns. I found Sylvester the cat. This was my personal favourite costumer of all time. It was about 300 degrees inside, but it was a big hit at the party. The next year she made me a shark, not quite as good, but still pretty cool. A couple of years after that my girlfriend decided she wanted to be Tweety. I found Sylvester again and we went to a party as Sylvester and Tweety. Her big old yellow bird head made her about a foot taller than me. It was probably our best Halloween party ever, the costumes made it.

Cool Halloween Costumes That Will Never Go Out of Style

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Admit it, you're one of those people who are too worried about dressing up in a costume during Halloween because you immediately think about how stupid you might look. To a lot of people Halloween is that time of the year to dress either amazingly or embarrassingly. In other words it's a hit or miss prospect. This might be true, but only if you're planning to dress up like a ghost or a clown. That's because dressing up for Halloween doesn't have to involve white make up, a red nose and big shoes, or a white long dress and brown paper bag with two holes. With a little dash of resourcefulness and awareness of characters in mainstream media, you can find some great costume ideas that will keep you looking attractive and confident.

People in uniform

This may be an unimaginative and safe bet, but it's a sure-fire way to look attractive. Considering that women swoon over men in uniform such as soldiers and firemen due to oozing masculinity, it's no secret that dressing up in any uniform is a good way to go during Halloween parties. This applies to women as well. Women can take advantage of the fact that men can't keep their eyes off the outfits of cheerleaders, school girls and nurses, to name just a few.

Pop Culture

Imitating characters portrayed by celebrities is another great costume idea. Just think of famous movie characters and popular media personalities in pop culture. There are plenty of fantastic options for you. Dressing up like Austin Powers, for example, won't disappoint because the International Man of Mystery will never go out of style. Or, you could also dress up as a pirate from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Since ladies love Captain Jack Sparrow, dressing up as him would definitely spice things up a bit. The possibilities are endless. You can dress up as a gangster, a cowboy, as Zorro, or The Joker portrayed by the late Heath Ledger.

Sports idols

This is perhaps the easiest of all options due to its simplicity and availability. You can easily purchase the required clothing from any nearby sporting goods store. Plus there are so many kinds of sports out there and hundreds of renowned athletes, making your job of picking one out so much easy. From American football to European soccer, wear your favorite athlete's jersey coupled with all the appropriate accessories such as helmets, bands, and shoes, and pray that you would be able to spot a woman in the party with the same idea and dressed as Maria Sharapova.

Cultural and traditional costumes

Just like sports attires, you can't go wrong with traditional costumes because you're absolutely sure people will recognize your outfit. If someone doesn't, you're either doing it wrong or the person's a space alien. It's easy to do too; just pick a time period like the '60s or '80s, and dress up like they did at that time. For instance, you can dress like the 1930s gangster outfit like Al Capone or John Dillinger. Or, you can also opt for something more exciting such as the '70s leisure suits or '80s ultra tight black leather tops and pants. GP

5 Easy 'No-Sew' Halloween Costume Ideas

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Everyone wants a great Halloween costume but if you want to create your own instead of going with those common store-bought varieties, we have some suggestions for you. If you would like to design a costume for Halloween but prefer to keep it simple with no sewing involved, here are some great easy ideas.

One of the oldest and simplest ideas around is the ghost costume. All you need is an old white sheet and a pair of scissors. Cut out slots for the eyes so you can see where you are going and you've got it made.

Dressing like T.V. characters is always a lot of fun. Take Pippi Longstocking, for example. All you need are some knee high colorful socks, hair in pigtails and use an eyebrow pencil for freckles (if you don't have them naturally). Add a simple shirt and a pair of jeans with the legs rolled up and your costume is complete.

If you want to be a little more eye-catching, how about being Cinderella for a night? Pick out one of your prettiest dresses, fix up your hair and apply just the right amount of makeup. Add a pair of fancy ballroom shoes and some sparkly jewelry and you are ready for a Halloween you will not forget for a long time. Just make sure you are ready to run when the clock strikes twelve.

Another famous Halloween costume is Abraham Lincoln. You need a dark suit and a white shirt with tie, along with a top hat and a fake beard. What a simple but distinguish costume that does not require much effort at all!

If you prefer something a little more dramatic, then use some old clothes and cut holes and make rips in the shirt and pants. Buy some Halloween makeup along with some fake blood to make your costume more realistic. Put all this together and you have the perfect zombie costume.

Remember if all else fails, you can always purchase one of the many Halloween face masks that are made available today. Add them to an outfit that matches the theme of the mask and they make great Halloween costumes. Dressing up for Halloween can be simple and a lot of fun when you let your imagination take over for a night.

Funny Couples Costume Ideas For Halloween

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Tired of the same old typical Halloween costumes. You know the ones....vampire, witch, or mummy. It also seems that everyone just "has" to wear the latest movie craze costume as well, like a Batman Begins costume. Maybe it's time to come up with a more unique and funny Halloween costume...just to be different.

If you're somewhat crafty and handy with a sewing machine, many amusing costume ideas can be pretty simple to make. It just takes a bit of ingenuity and creativity. Even so, if you don't have the time or patience to create your own Halloween costume, maybe a friend of yours can help. As a last (or perhaps first?) resort, you can also buy most of these costumes online although it will just cost you a bit more.

So for those wanting something a bit different this year, here are 3 funny Halloween costumes that are easy to make. Perfect for those couples that like to dress up together!

**Plug and Socket**

Materials needed: black cotton material, heavy white iron on interfacing, large square piece of foam (enough to fit around hips), scrap cardboard, gold colored paint, hot glue and gun, black long sleeved shirt, black pants.

1. For the electrical outlet costume, measure from your knees up to your shoulders, then double this length and cut. For the width, measure from shoulder tip to shoulder tip and add an inch. Cut your current length of material to the proper width.

2. Fold the material in half width-wise (ie. if you hold the material in front of you it still falls the full length from shoulder to knees). Cut a hole out of the folded end so your head will fit through. Hem the opening.

3. Slip the material over your head so that it's inside out. Carefully pin the material together 3 to 4 inches below your underarms on each side. Remove the costume and sew seams from the bottom up to your underarm pins. Hem the bottom of the costume.

4. Cut out 2 large socket shapes from the white iron-on interfacing. Carefully cut two rectangles out of the inside of each socket shape (where you "plug" would go). Iron the sockets to the front of the outfit, one above the other.

5. Dress in a black shirt and black pants (or skirt). Slip the costume on and you're done.

6. For the Plug Costume, take the white foam and carefully cut a whole through the back third of the foam piece (not in the center - you want more foam in front to act as the "plug"). Step into the foam and slide it up over your hips. You made need to adjust the opening to fit. If necessary, make two black straps and attach them with a glue gun to the inside front and back openings of the foam and slip the straps over your shoulders to hold the foam in place.

7. Cut 2 "metal plug connections" from the scrap cardboard. Paint with gold paint. Let dry and then carefully slice into the front of the foam to position the plugs. Hot glue into place. Your "plug" costume is finished.

**Traffic Lights**

Materials needed: yellow cotton fabric, 2 squares each of red, green and dark yellow felt, matching colored thread or iron-on double-sided interfacing.

1. As above, cut a tabard from the yellow cotton. Measure from knee to shoulder, double the length and cut. Figure out the width by measuring from shoulder to shoulder and cut your length of material to the proper width.

2. Hem all edges. Fold in half and cut a semi-circle on the fold to fit your head through. Hem the opening. Cut two 4" wide strips of yellow material about 5" to 6" in length (this will vary depending on how large or small you are). Slip the costume on and pin the straps to the back and front on each side near your waist. Sew into place. You might also choose to hem the sides as in Step 3 of Plug and Socket Costume.

3. Cut a red circle, dark yellow circle and green circle. Position on the front of the costume. You can either sew these one or use double-faced iron-on interfacing to secure. Wear black pants and a black, long sleeved jersey underneath.

**Tacky Tourists**

Items needed: white Bermuda shorts, tacky Hawaiian shirts, tacky sandals (for the men, don't forget to wear socks with your sandals), beach comber hats, plastic flowered leis', white zinc ointment, camera, straw beach bag, large funky sunglasses.

1. Just dress up. Add some of the zinc across your noses (don't want sunburn!) and you're good to go.

And there you have it. Three costumes that are simple to make and fun to wear. All it takes is a look around your house to find "pairs" of items that could be turned into funny Halloween costumes that would be perfect to wear as a couple this year.

Easy Halloween Costumes For Free

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Cheap costumes, and even free costumes, are a real possibility for every family this Halloween. Are you tired of overpriced plastic Halloween costumes? Or are you looking for a break from the mass-produced polyester princess gowns? Maybe you like all that stuff, but making ends meet this year is getting harder and harder. The solution is in your own home! It's time to turn on your printer and venture into the back of your closet.

You can get free printable-masks online and use old clothes and fabric from around your house to dress up in a complimentary fashion. This simple combination of elements creates winning, easy Halloween costumes for the season, and a nice break for your finances.

If you aren't very handy with a needle and thread, don't worry about it. You can use rubber bands or safety pins. You can drape and belt fabric without having to make a single stitch. Don't think you have a lot of fabric around? You can use old curtains that you've banished to the attic, or sheets that you've been piling up for a garage sale. There is spare fabric in everyone's home, you just have to identify it, then use it for all it is worth.

Let's say the only fabric you can find is old clothing that doesn't fit anyone in your family anymore. That's great news! Cut it up into strips and glue it or pin it onto something that does fit. You can cut the legs off of old pantyhose, tie them in knots around your wrist and attach a bunch of strips of torn colored fabric to them. Now you've got furry paws! Print out any animal mask and you're half way home.

Just turn on your creative juices. You've probably got everything you need right there around you. With the help of online printable masks, you can make great costumes for free, and have fun doing it. Years from now, you'll remember the Halloween that your family made costumes together much more fondly than the years that you threw something in your shopping cart.

Female Halloween Costumes That Would Be Great For Any Halloween Party

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Let's face it. Girls do want to have fun. But they want to have fun while looking glam. And with Halloween just around the corner, picking out the right Halloween costume can get tricky (yes, pun intended). After all, who wants to end up looking like a nasty old hag? Here are some ideas for female Halloween costumes that will put back the treat into the trick!

1. Fairytale

Instead of going as another Disney Princess, what better way to glitter and shine than to go as a beautiful fairy instead! All you really need is a short, flowy dress, some shiny eye-makeup and wings! You can buy small wings at the children's department in most malls or in toy stores. If you're the crafty type, you can even make a pair of wings on your own by using chicken wire and crepe paper and sequins.

If you're not into the whole glitter thing, why don't you consider going as a pixie? All you'll need is a short skirt, a midriff shirt and some gel to spike up your hair.

2. Alpha-Females

Nothing cranks up the power play better than dressing up as your favorite alpha-female. You can get inspiration for this from everywhere: books, movies, cartoon characters. Into comics? Why don't you go as Wonder Woman? Loved Disney movies as a child, dress up as that ultra-chic but ultra-evil Cruela De Ville.

3. Rockstar

Rockstars get all the fun. So, for Halloween, ditch the usual work clothes you wear everyday for something rock-worthy. Why don't you go as Pink - complete with the cropped, neon hair (you can wear a wig) and piercings (you can use fake piercings as well). If you want something more feminine, dress up as Gwen Stefani with her blings and diamonds. You can even go as Avril Lavigne (pre-marriage) and wear a long, red wig; some cargo pants and a shirt with a star logo.

4. Goddesses

And of course, what better way to get everyone saying "va-va-voom" than by dressing up as a Greek goddess. All you'll really need is a full-length, flowing, tube dress (a one-shouldered one will do too) and a belt. You can opt to put your hair up with loose tendrils framing your face or you can just let your locks loose in flowing waves. Accessorize with a bangle or two.

5. Book/Movie Characters

If you're into the whole sci-fi or fantasy thing, dress up as your favorite character. Can't get enough of Star Wars? Come as Princess Lea. Loved Lord of the Rings? You can go as an elf, or the elf herself: Arwen. If you're feeling whimsical, try going as Dorothy in Wizard of Oz. Or as the intellectual and gorgeous Lois Lane? You can even get your special someone to go as Clark Kent/Superman.

There are hundreds of great costume ideas for Halloween. All you have to do is look around and be inspired. Don't stress too much about it though, the point is to have fun. And having fun is what matters.

Naughty Halloween Costumes and Other Ideas For Your Halloween Party

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Remember those Halloweens when your mother would dress you up for Trick or Treat? Remember being all embarrassed when she'd bring out pictures of you covered you in a white sheet with holes for your eyes to show your friends? Or perhaps she dressed you as a huge pumpkin, complete with the green felt hat for the stump. As a child, nothing could be as bad as having the worst costume at Halloween. But everyone's been there a time or two.

Now, you're all grown up and Halloween is here once more. You may not be young enough to go Trick or Treat-ing, but that doesn't mean you can't party! In fact, this is the chance for you and your friends to show off those naughty Halloween costumes you've been hiding in your closet the whole year!

How do you plan the most rockin' Halloween party for grown-ups this year? Here are some tips to get you started:

1. Decide on a theme.

Everybody knows you're supposed to go to a Halloween party in a costume. But it would be extra special if you could think of a particular theme, so everyone could dress accordingly. If you're a fan of C.S. Lewis, for example, you can have a Narnia theme for your party. Imagine a room full of centaurs, witches, dwarves, talking animals and fawns! If you're all for detective stories, you can have a Sherlock Holmes themed party. Or have a Superhero theme. This way, you can even plan the decorations and food around the theme!

2. No Costume, No Party

Let's face it. There are party poopers. Those stubborn souls who refuse to cooperate and come to the party as, well, themselves. Bo-ring! In order to discourage such behavior, why don't you put a warning in your invitation: those who don't come in costume will have to pay a fee. And make them pay it! It's your party after all, and they have to play by your rules if they want in on the fun.

3. Food

Since its Halloween anyway, you might as well go all out and prepare "Halloween food" as well. Serve alcoholic Bloody Mary's and bowls of gummy worms and other gummy creepy-crawlies. Serve drinks in goblets and use a lot of candles. Just remember to be careful, of course!

4. Entertainment

What's Halloween without a little scare? Set up a small stage where your friends can share ghost stories. Assign one of your closest buds to be the official "spooker" of the night: tell him to jump out of dark corners, slip in and out of seemingly deserted rooms (wearing white) or suddenly shut the lights in the middle of the party. This may not really terrify, but it could provide your guests with a good laugh. If you're into dancing, you can also set up a dance floor and choose songs appropriate for the occasion. Think Michael Jackson's Thriller.

With these tips, you'll be on your way to throwing that spectacular party. Good luck and have a smashing Halloween!

Top 5 Scary Halloween Costumes For Kids of 2009

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When it comes to anchor text-scary Halloween costumes for kids-anchor text there are many options but I chose 5 for this article

1. First one is the easy one: The infamous vampire costume! The main reason is that it's easy to reproduce and you can go light or go all the way; plus it's hard to miss! I remember dressing up as dracula when I was a kid but remember the main problem being the incompatibility of the false teeth and chewy candies thus I only wore the fake teeth the first 10 minutes!

2. Second, I chose the classic ghost costume. Once again its simplicity is a driving force behind this choice. You can go all the way from using a simple sheet with holes (Make sure it's safe!) to an all out hollywood ghost! I saw some very impressive Ghost costumes through the years. You just need to use your imagination and the internet for some great ideas...

3. Third, the easy choice is the Scary Witch Costume. This one is also an option that is only limited by your imagination. With today's makeup tips you can transform your beautiful little girl into the ugliest witch in minutes!

4. Fourth, I'm going very broad and choosing the Super Hero Costume. Here I suggest you go with the flavor of the month costume which changes monthly considering the numerous movies about diverse Marvels characters. But you don't have to because even if you decide to go as Superman, Batman or Wonder Woman, you'll still be the center of attraction!

2010 Halloween Costume Ideas, Cool!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When Halloween arrives, besides the kids, when it comes to buying Halloween costumes you will not want to be scared away. The first step is to plan the process. Make sure you have plenty of ideas to tackle the problem. If you think your lost, do not get scared, you have come to the right place.

Halloween costumes mean the best in creativity. Do not be the walking dead. Feel free to make your originality come alive. Take characters you really like, blend it with your most exciting dramatic movie events, and walla! Before you know it, you will be the life or death of the party if that is what you want.

If your looking for gore, go all out! Halloween costumes that are the most realistic require that touch of accessorizing ability. Be detailed oriented right down to the nails, teeth, and cuts. If you look is more austere, go for the regal look of the cowboy. Add the hat and spurs for a more authentic feel. Do not have time for details? Not a problem! Grab the ole bed sheet, tear a couple holes for the eyes and nose and off you go. For less time, grab some ketchup packets, rub on your face and watch the people cry.

The Victorian look pleases crowds but if you really want to catch the attention of that special someone, go all out with the Transylvania theme. Dark and tall always gets 'em.. Going for the modern yet 'do them in look in Halloween costume design' think batman or gorge bush.

Do not forget, being hip is still the scary way to go for you Halloween rockers. Try all of the latest fads. In the end, to scare the most and be the life of the party, it is never what you are wearing but your attitude that counts. Practice the howls and oohls, scare a few friends by opening your wallet or purse and most importantly, have a howling good time.

Remembering Homemade Costumes of Yesteryear

A Boy and his Imagination

A few years ago my youngest son decided long before Halloween that he had his costume all figured out. He wouldn't share the secret, only said that he had everything he needed to make his best Halloween costume ever.

His joy in planning and preparing for Halloween using things available around the house reminded me of the homemade (and sometime last minute) costumes I'd worn over the years.

Costumes of Halloween Past

I remember one year, I believe it was grade 1, that I dressed as Casper the Friendly Ghost. I paraded around the school dressed in my white sheet feeling like I had the best costume ever!

Another year, my mother spent hours making costumes for my sister and me. I went as a skeleton. My costume consisted of a huge black plastic bag, on which my mom had attached several "bones" made out of white paper. My mask was a white paper plate that had been cut to the approximate shape of a bare skull.

My sister's costume was much more elaborate. She trick-or-treated that year as a shaggy dog. The head and body were made of two large cardboard boxes. The shaggy part was made with hundreds of precisely cut strips of old newspaper, curled with scissors and pasted to the boxes.

These costumes may not seem like much, but they are among the few that I remember well from my childhood. One other costume I remember was homemade more out of haste than anything else. It was the last year I went trick-or-treating. I must have been 13 or 14. I had resolved not to go out, but at the last minute, changed my mind. I ran into my dad's body shop, grabbed a shop coat and a mask that he used when painting, and collecting a pillowcase on the way out, I was off. I'm not even sure what I was dressed as, but it was fun!

Back to the Boy

Halloween arrives, and my six-year-old son takes his dad to his room and explains what he needs for his costume: safety pins and a mask made from black construction paper. A short time later, he announces he is ready, and "Batman" comes into the hallway. His costume consists of a black cape (an upside-down black t-shirt safety-pinned to the black shirt he's wearing), a mask (fashioned from construction paper), a symbol (drawn on a white piece of paper and taped to his shirt), and a utility belt (also made of white paper). He has never been more satisfied with a Halloween costume than the day he made his own!

A Halloween Tale

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It's almost Halloween and I am pretty sure many people are wondering how this event came about. Things such as pumpkins, ghosts, Halloween black cats, and vampires are some of the other stuff that get associated with eve of October 31st. Where did everything start and how did Halloween turn into what it is now?

Halloween Costumes
According to an old tale, Halloween started out as the Winter's eve, which was also known as the eve of Samhain. It was what the Celts observed as their New Year's Eve. The people back then believed that during this time, the spirits of the dead come back to take over the bodies of those who are still living.

This story scared everybody and they decided to think of different ways to stop these spirits from haunting them and possessing their bodies. That is how dressing up in scary costumes began. They started to leave their homes dark and cold, making it look like nobody alive was residing there. They also wore ghoulish costumes and creepy attire while parading and walking around the town. They made lots of noises so that the spirits would get frightened of them and go away.

Halloween Black Cats
In olden times, especially in ancient Egypt, cats were treated as gods. People would offer food, treasure and themselves to these creatures because they believed cats would bring them good health and luck. However, this practice changed and cats were suddenly considered as evil. The people believed that their breath and teeth cause misfortune and contained poison. There was one instance when a peasant unsuspectingly swallowed cat hair and suffocated. This incident just further instigated cats as bad and mean animals. Because they are also nocturnal living things and they move around a lot at night, they were considered to be servants of witches.

Since then, the persecution of cats became rampant. According to history records, the first cat to be persecuted was in Metz, France in 962 A.D. It happened on a Wednesday and because of that, the event was called Cat Wednesday in the coming centuries. The persecutors believed that these cats were really witches in disguise who were going to do bad and evil things. The first official persecuting event was led by Pope Gregory IX.

Over the years, the story of Halloween and black cats has evolved. Nowadays, different countries and cultures all over the world have varying practices and habits with regards to this matter.

Fun Ideas With Themed Family Halloween Costumes

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Have you been looking for a way to make Halloween more fun for your entire family? Are you the sort of family who love going out together and having fun? If your answer is 'yes' to any one of those questions, here's a fun idea to make Halloweens more fun for your family. This Halloween, choose a theme that both you and your kids like. Then, go out and buy costumes that match that theme. Since you will be looking for costumes in adult and children's sizes, it is better that you look in a place that has a large collection of costumes in both sizes.

Once you have gotten the right costumes, the fun part can begin. There's nothing like the whole family dressing up to match each other. Let your imagination run wild when it comes to the theme.

Cartoons are always a popular theme, so you can choose to dress up as Loony Tunes characters. There are so many characters to choose from that you can focus on one set. For example, you can decide to dress up like the villains. So you can choose from Yosemite Sam, Wiley Coyote or even Marvin the Martian. Or you can all choose to dress up as one character. The entire family can go out dressed like Bugs or Daffy. The fun is in watching the same character take on different sizes and shapes.

Or you can choose a fairy tale theme. With so many fairy tales around, you can easily turn your entire family in to a family from a fairy tale. So the parents can dress up liked kings and queens and the children can dress up like princes and princesses. If you have a newborn or very young daughter, you can also dress her up as an adorable little fairy.

Accessories are very important when it comes to dressing up in Halloween costumes. So make sure you have the right ones when you choose your costumes, especially if they do not come with accessories of their own. For example, a generic princess costume will usually have a tiara but you can make it extra special by adding a magic wand to it. In fact, you can reinvent a costume by adding accessories. So if you already have a princess costume, you can add a wand and wings to make it a fairy princess costume. Similarly, if you have a pirate costume, you can get a fake hook and become the 'Hook' from Peter Pan.

When it comes to choosing a theme for the family, there's a lot of room for innovation. So you can also make do with the costumes that you already have. The best thing about choosing a family theme is that you will never run out of ideas and you can always reinvent an old theme. So not only do you make Halloween a fun family activity, you also make the planning part much easier.
